the Carmel

01 - Christ on the cross - 1896

We know of three copies of this "biblical" image of Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross - a subject dear to Thérèse for years. See this inspiring image from his teenage years here.

Thérèse made two copies herself, one for herself (later offered to the postulator of her cause in Rome) and one for Céline, who then made a copy a little larger.

I am thirsty.... Give me a drink!... John 19, 28 – 4, 7

If you knew the Gift of God, and who is He who says to you: "Give me a drink", perhaps you would have asked him for it and he would have given you living water!... He who will drink the water that I will give him will never be thirsty and this water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water which wells up to Eternal life...

Lord give me this Water so that I will never be thirsty again. John 4

Lord, you know well that I love you but have pity on me, because I am only a sinner!

John 21, 15 - Luke 18, 13

(The three verses on the back are taken from the poetry 24, str. 10, 25 and 26, with variations.)

Remember, that at the edge of the fountain A traveler weary of the road Made the Samaritan woman overflow The waves of love, which her bosom contained. Ah! I know the One, who asked for a drink, He is the Gift of God, the source of glory It is you, the water that springs Jesus, you said to us: "Come to me"

Remember, of the loving complaint Which on the Cross, escaped from your heart, Ah! in mine, Jesus, it is imprinted And of your Thirst, I share the ardor The more I feel burned by your divine flames The more I am altered to give you souls. That with a thirst for love I burn night and day Remember....

Remember, Jesus, Word of Life That you loved me until you died for me I also want to love you madly I also want to live and die for you... You know it, oh my God! all I want is to make you loved and to be a martyr one day... Of love, I want to die Lord of my desire: Remember.... PN 24
