Letter from Mrs. Martin to Mrs. Guérin CF 68
July 30 1871.
...I had a rough week: we moved [rue St Blaise]; I had, however, enough people, but everything had to be placed. I was so tired at night that I couldn't sleep, and with that I had to take care of little Celine.
I no longer have a maid. It's been a month since mine fell ill with articular rheumatism; I took care of her for three weeks, we had to watch her day and night. I had brought a person from his country who stayed a fortnight, but it was not my business; finally, last Monday, I had my patient transported in a car, on a bed. His mother will take care of it. I think she still has some time left, but since I know she won't die of it, I'll wait for her. I care a lot for her and she for me. I have a housekeeper at the moment.
I'm leaving for Le Mans on Tuesday to pick up my granddaughters; if it is a great joy, it is also a great addition to more.
I tormented my husband so much that he decided to sell part of his Crédit Foncier, with a loss of thirteen hundred francs out of the eleven thousand francs he brought in. If my brother needs money, he asks for it right away, and he tells me whether to sell the rest, Louis doesn't like losing so much.
I have no time to write to you more, I have so much to do at home; it's especially little Céline that gives me trouble, she's becoming capricious, she's been spoiled too much.
We are perfectly housed. My husband has arranged the house quite well for me to enjoy. You will see the beautiful room we will give you when you come, but unfortunately that time is still far away Finally, I hope it will be next year with the three babies... You also need to tell me without ceremony what that I must give to my goddaughter or to my godson, but I believe that it will be a goddaughter, for the fear that I have because of you!
My husband does not forget his little goddaughter Marie. He bought her a gold neck chain, with a cross.
Farewell, my dear sister, see you soon, kiss my brother and my two little nieces for me.
