Letter from Mrs. Martin CF 82
To Mrs Guerin
29 September 1872.
Here we are at the end of the holidays, it is time for Marie to send you the letter she promised you. The start of the school year was supposed to be on October 2, but I received a note from my sister who told me that it would be postponed until the 9th because of the repairs that have not been completed at the Boarding School; you can imagine that didn't make the children cry.
You ask me if we had nice walks during the holidays? We went to the Butte de Chaumont, where I was quite bored. To tell the truth, I hardly like sitting at my window, assembling my Point d'Alençon.
We didn't go to Mme L., she was supposed to come and fetch us, but, thank God, she forgot her promise and I assure you that I was very satisfied with it; I had no desire to waste my time at her house, I have other things to do at the moment.
I beg my brother not to forget the two kilos of fine candy I need for the Baptism of "little Therese." He will send me, at the same time, 50 pounds of chocolate and a small quantity of tapioca. Let him put it all in a dummy; I'll return it to him with a goose in it, when the time comes.
I'm already thinking about the end of the year, because of the child who will come for my New Year's Eve. How shall I raise him? I have nightmares of it every night. Finally, it is to be hoped that I will come out of it better than I believe and that I will not have the pain of losing him.
