Letter from Mrs. Martin CF 73
To Mrs Guerin
5 November 1871.
...My brother's last letter really relieved me, because I was so sad that I couldn't get over it. I saw that you were both resigned to the will of the good God who deprived you of your dear little angel, to place him immediately among the blessed. You are saddened, no doubt, to have lost a beautiful little child on earth, but happy to have an angel in Heaven. These two feelings: pain and joy, often merge in me; we know that life is short and that soon we will see them again.
For my part, I'm afraid it's sooner than I would like, because I've been feeling very tired for some time and, despite the extreme desire I have to see my four little angels again, I prefer to be private longer, knowing that they don't need me, to stay with the four I have left and to whom I am still useful, it seems to me.
Behold the ringing of vespers; goodbye, my dear sister. While waiting to hear from you, I embrace you with all my heart.
