Letter from Mrs. Martin CF 107
To Mrs Guerin
August 20, 1873.
I hadn't decided to leave for Lisieux until the last fortnight of September, but since it suits you better, we'll come forward at the 30th current and take the eleven o'clock train. I would have liked to see all your family and I regret the setback which presents itself, because it is impossible for me to leave earlier, because of a sending of laces which I must make
The children are very sad to think that they won't see Marguerite Maudelonde, they beg me to leave on Saturday, but I can't. Wouldn't it be possible to join your parents in the countryside, instead of going to Trouville, as you had intended? For me, I would gladly sacrifice the pleasure of seeing the sea, to meet your family.
So, it's understood, if it doesn't bother anyone, we'll go and spend a day in the countryside. Pauline absolutely wants Marguerite to be her cousin; she declares that Jeanne being her first cousin and also that of Marguerite, it is impossible that the latter is nothing for her. It is therefore agreed that Marguerite is everyone's cousin!
We had a pilgrimage to Alencon on Assumption Day. The three parishes were united, as well as three surrounding parishes; there were five or six hundred young girls in white. This pilgrimage went to the Chapel of Notre-Dame de Lorette, at the gates of the city. There have been many words said on this subject. It is claimed that it is to obtain the restoration of Henry V.
While waiting, I saw men passing by, jostling the crowd, threatening in their mouths, saying: “We will save France! »
Farewell, my dear sister, soon we will have the pleasure of seeing each other again.
