The stories

First miracle

Healing of Father Charles Anne.

Lisieux (Normandy), January 29, 1907.

I am a 23 year old seminarian. After numerous spittings of blood and violent haemorrhages, I had reached such a degree of weakness that I had to take to my bed on August 23, 1906. Two doctors judged my condition to be very serious: a deep cave had formed in my lungs. right, the bronchi were badly damaged and the analysis of the sputum revealed the presence of the tuberculosis bacillus. The doctors admitted they were powerless and condemned me.

So my parents, in tears, asked for my healing from Our Lady of Lourdes through the intercession of Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus, and I put a sachet of this little Saint's hair around my neck. During the first days of this novena, my condition worsened: I had such a violent hemorrhage that I thought I was going to die; a priest was hastily summoned; but, although I was urged to make the sacrifice of my life, I could not bring myself to do so, and I confidently awaited the end of the novena. On the last day, nothing better had happened. Then the memory of Therese presented itself to my heart, the words which so clearly outlined her great soul filled me with an indescribable confidence: "I want to spend my heaven doing good on earth." I took the young Carmelite at her word. She was in heaven, oh! yes, I was sure of it; I was on earth, I was suffering, I was going to die: there was good to do, she had to. So clutching the dear relic tightly to my bosom, I prayed to the Saint with so much force that, in truth, the very efforts, made in view of life, should have given me death.

We began a novena again, this time asking for my healing from Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus herself, with the promise, if she answered us, to publish the report. The next day the fever dropped suddenly, and the following days, after the auscultation, the doctor concluded that he had recovered just as categorically as he had affirmed the end. Of the cavern of the lungs there was no longer a trace, the oppression had ceased and the appetite was noticeably returning. I was cured. But at the same time as she renewed my physical strength, Thérèse also accomplished a marvelous transformation in my soul. In one day, she did in me the work of a lifetime.

I stop, my Reverend Mother. God has placed in my heart such gratitude that I will never be able to express it. Help me to give him thanks.

Charles Anne

Father Anne, who became a priest, enjoys perfect health and today exercises a most active ministry as chaplain of the Hospice in Lisieux.

Documents relating to miracles attributed to the intercession of Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus

(excerpt from the Apostolic Process)

In the case of Abbé Charles Anne, we find the abbot himself, vicar at Pont-l'Evêque; his parents, Prosper-Alexandre Anne and Joséphine-Reine Hare; his physician, Dr. Paul Loisnel; Sister Marie Saint-Ignace (Clémence François), of the nuns of the Immaculate Conception of Nogent-le-Rotrou, to whom is due the initiative of the novena of prayers to Thérèse to obtain healing. Finally, as co-witness ex officia, we have Father Polydore Morel, pastor-dean of Pont-l'Evêque where Father Anne was vicar. On August 74, 3, at the request of the under‑promoter, Mgr. T. Dubosq, two medical experts, doctors Adolphe‑Jean Leprévost and Alexandre‑Damase de Cornière—a Carmel doctor who cared for Thérèse during her illness—made a control visit to Father Anne, then attesting—session 1917, of the following August 76—that the good state of health of the priest was maintained.

second miracle

Healing of Sister Louise of Saint-Germain

Tale of the Miracle

Convent of the Daughters of the Cross, in Ustaritz (Basses-Pyrénées).

During my novitiate in 1911 and 1912, I had quite often experienced stomachaches and headaches, accompanied by painful vomiting; however, my health was not so affected as to prevent me from being admitted to religious profession, after which I left for Spain. But, from the first months of 1913, stomach pains reappeared more frequently, and vomiting, mingled with blood, proved that an ulcer had formed inside. Back in Ustaritz, I was first put on a diet of eggs and milk, with a few tablets of bismuth. A crisis more acute than all the preceding ones, which occurred on the night of November 14, forced me to twenty-five days of water diet and complete rest. The doctor declared that the internal wound of the stomach continued through the pylorus, up to the upper part of the duodenum.

After eight months of treatment in the infirmary, I thought I was well enough to ask to resume my class, and I obtained permission to return to Spain. Alas! evil was only asleep. The same symptoms recurred, with an unprecedented upsurge accompanied by profuse bleeding. An operation was deemed indispensable, and I was again sent back to our Provincial House at Ustaritz. After an extremely painful journey, I arrived there in such a state of weakness that they thought it necessary to administer the last Sacraments to me.

It was at the beginning of the summer of 1915. I remained in this total exhaustion. For thirty-two days, taking for food only a few sips of ice water which I then rejected at the cost of cruel suffering. It was then that the Community began a novena to Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus. I unite myself to it with joy, for I loved the little Saint very much, who even condescended, during this novena, to make me feel her presence. I had, in fact, the very sweet impression of his hand resting on my head as if to reassure me, and for three days a mysterious perfume that the Sisters could not explain spread through the room that I busy. This grace was intended to sustain my courage, for I was to suffer for a long time yet. Seeing that the prayers had no effect, I no longer asked for my healing from Sister Thérèse, I only invoked her to obtain her assistance.

In the meantime, at the beginning of September 1916, one of our Sisters, passing through here, inspired me to renew my entreaties to the dear Saint. Yielding to his invitation, I joined the sacrifice to the prayer, and redoubled my confidence. Now, what was my astonishment when, on the night of September 10, Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus herself came to me and said: “Be generous, you will soon be cured, I promise you. Then she disappeared. And in the morning, the three nuns who slept in my infirmary were quite surprised to find rose petals of all colors around my bed. It was the presage of my recovery; but it was about to delay for a few more days, during which I endured a real martyrdom and was reduced to the limit. It was only on the evening of September 21, after a most violent attack, that I suddenly fell asleep against all expectations, only to wake up the next day completely cured. No more suffering, but a feeling of general well-being. I was very hungry and I got up joyfully to ask permission to attend Holy Mass. Out of wise prudence, my worthy Superior forced me to go back to bed where I was brought a hearty breakfast; and soon, in view of the evidence of my complete recovery, I was able to resume my regular life. Since that time, that is to say for a year, I have enjoyed perfect health, and he remains deeply grateful to Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus, whom I would like to make known to everyone.
