How Saint Therese loved Jesus. The graces granted to her faith: one day when Saint Thérèse was passing through the cloister, filled with the sole object of her love, she suddenly saw a young child who came to her saying: What is your name? – My name is Thérèse of Jesus, replies the saint, taken aback. “And I,” resumed the handsome child, with a divine smile, “I am Thérèse's Jesus! The graces granted to his unshakeable fidelity in the exercise of prayer. Saint Thérèse was not the only one who benefited from her fidelity to this holy practice; the Church gained from it two great goods, which have served and which will serve for all ages as for all countries. The first of these goods were the immortal writings in which this great saint deposited the marvelous lights she drew from prayer. It is there that the highest secrets of the spiritual life are exposed; and that, with an elevation of language which seizes the soul; with such certainty that the greatest doctors have never found the slightest word to repeat, with such lucidity that everyone can understand them; with such unction that one cannot read them without feeling touched; finally with such clearness that the original of his writings, which has been preserved for a long time in the Palace of the Escorial in Spain, does not contain a single erasure. The second good with which the prayer of Saint Thérèse enriched the Church was the reform of Carmel. The work was extremely difficult, especially for a simple woman. It pleased God to choose her, to show the world that the work of Carmel was an entirely divine work and a miracle of grace; that in the hands of Providence, the simplest instruments are the best; that the soul chosen by God for a work must never allow itself to be discouraged by the difficulties of the enterprise or by its own weakness; that finally, with prayer, we can do anything! In fact, prayer enlightened Saint Thérèse with such pure light, filled her with such marvelous confidence in God, and gave her to speak of divine things and of the reform such celestial eloquence that nothing could resist it. Her words revealed in her a humility, a patience, a union with God which, confirmed by her holy examples, caused her reform to be adopted everywhere and formed Carmel into the most edifying and perfect religious body of the Church. Jesus calling these children: let, he said, come to me, the children, because the kingdom of God is for those who are like them. I tell you the truth, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a child will not enter it. Jesus and little children: with Jesus, the Church loves little children and will always fight against the kidnappers of their innocence. O Jesus, I also want to love children, to welcome them, to teach them and to be like them to please you better.
