the Carmel

Circular of Sister Thérèse of Jesus

Leonie Jezenska 1839-1918

Having died outside the monastery, she did not have a circular. We transcribe some notes here.

Léonie is the daughter of a Breton woman and a young Polish doctor (himself born to a German mother and a father from the Polish nobility). The mother died when the little one was 7 years old – she was taken in by her Breton grandmother. She will experience an unspoiled childhood, without any real family life. It was only after the death of her grandmother that she entered the Carmel, at the age of 33, immediately after the profession of Sr. Jean-Baptiste and Sr. Aimée. She will be Marguerite-Marie's novitiate companion, and Thérèse of St Augustine will follow them. Five young women who will grow up together.

Marie des Anges describes her as cheerful and amiable, always asking for work that her poor eyes often refuse her.

For the record, Sister Thérèse of Jesus will leave at her request in 1909, at the age of 70, to go and live in a Congregation less mortified in terms of heating and food – we still do not know about this house of nuns.
