The essential to know the history of the 46 editions.
These few lines are intended to introduce the reader to the 46 editions of the Story of a Soul (HA) published between 1898 and 1955. Two dates that must first be clearly identified. The second is that of the last edition: it precedes by one year the publication, in 1956, of the facsimiles of the three manuscripts which were used to compose the main part of HA and by two years the printed edition intended to replace HA. , which will bear the incomprehensible title for the public of Autobiographical manuscripts (1957). The first date, better known, is that of the publication of the work, a year after Thérèse's death, to within a few days. The work was composed around mid-October. The first recipients receive it on October 21. It was financed by Mr. Guérin, Thérèse's uncle, who ordered a thousand copies from the Saint-Paul printing press in Bar-le-Duc for the Carmelites, who receive the book instead of the usual notice, and who will order other copies in Lisieux for those around them, if the book has been popular. This will be shown by the first responses from the prioresses and even more so by their immediate orders. The stock of the Carmel of Lisieux quickly ran out and the uncle had a second thousand printed, which now can also be ordered directly by customers or by booksellers from the three publishing houses Saint-Paul, Bar-le-Duc, Paris and Freiburg.
Some important dates
- The second edition is the subject of a first revision. Essentially, the usual addition of new letters of approval (that of the Roman Carmelites is found only in the 1900 edition) and the thinning out of chapter 12. This, in the first edition, brought together testimonies from the novices on Thérèse and the story of the last weeks of her earthly life. From 1899, the testimonies of the novices, under the title of “Paillettes d'or - Conseils et souvenirs” slipped into a more copious appendix which already included prayers, extracts from letters to Céline and above all most of the poems. - Appearance of a cheaper edition bearing a new title, Une rose effeuillée. The text concentrates more on the essential, the twelve chapters which present the life and death of Thérèse. Another novelty, which is of course a matter of marketing. The prints of later editions of HA, which are present until 1912 (125th thousand) include, but without saying so, those of a Rose effeuillée whose title, from 1909 is also given to an intermediate edition between HA and the first RE. - Major changes, marked in particular by a change in format, which means that the edition, printed at the end of the year, is only available at the very beginning of the following year. To get to the point, chapter twelve is largely reworked, in particular to better highlight the doctrine of Thérèse, identified for the first time as that of spiritual childhood. New correspondences appear. More visible, a new appendix devoted to the miracles of Thérèse, under the name of “Rains of roses”. See here.
- The Carmel decided to publish collections of miracles annually, under the name Pluie de roses, while continuing to include the miracles, renewed, in successive editions of HA. The 1913 and 1914 editions of Les Pluies de roses are books of about 500 pages, likely to compete with HA. See here.
- For the first time, the public learns of the existence of three manuscripts used to compose the first eleven chapters of HA. These manuscripts are discreetly identified at the beginning of each chapter by their recipient, Mother Agnès, Marie de Gonzague and Marie du Sacré-Coeur. This new presentation makes it possible to see their respective importance: eight chapters for the first, two, but abundant, for the second, one for the last. - The date is still important because Rome has just endorsed the trial conducted by the bishop since 1910. A new edition reports on it. See here. From now on, the text of HA underwent little modification, but subsequent editions reflected the final stages of Thérèse's posthumous career: venerable (1922 edition), blessed (1923), holy (1925).
- The latest edition, as a last stand, publishes almost all of Thérèse's prayers. See here.
Three tips for identifying an HA edition.
- You have to be wary of the titles given by libraries and on certain vendor sites. Where the full title of the work speaks of Sister (Sr) Thérèse, some presentations incorrectly display Saint (St) Thérèse, a title which is only given to Thérèse after the canonization of 1925.
- It is also necessary, to know the contents of an edition, to take into account the existence of multiple paginations. The 1898 edition includes, in addition to the 475 p of the book, a paginated introduction in Roman (XXVIII p). That is a total of 502 p. The 1912 edition includes, in addition to this same introduction, greatly enlarged (XLIII p), 506 p. of text plus an appendix of 113 p. (marked with an *) which includes miracles and the account of the 1910 exhumation. Adding another ten pages for the table of contents and the advertisement for the small Teresian enterprise and a few blank sheets, we reach a total of 675 p . This is the most copious edition. In 1914 HA is degreased and loses more than 50 pages.
- It is not always easy to find, in the presence of an old copy, the year of the edition. This can be identified on the title page by the number one thousand. But above all it appears very discreetly at the end of each work: after the name and address of the printer (Imp. Saint-Paul – Bar-le-Duc) there is a number. For example 6098,6,14. The first number (6098) corresponds to the identifier of the printer's publications, the following two, which interest us more, the month and the year of publication, i.e. here June 1914. I said above that the 1907 edition had been published late. It is verified by its numbering: 1392,12,07 (December 1907).
