My dear Uncle and my dear Aunt,

Your Benjamin comes in turn to wish you a Happy New Year!... As each day has its last hour, each year also sees its last evening arrive, and it is on the evening of this year that I feel inclined to take a look on the past and on the future; considering the time that has just passed, I feel inclined to thank the good Lord, because if his hand presented us with a chalice of bitterness, his divine heart knew how to support us in the test and he gave us the strength necessary to drink its chalice to the dregs... For the year which is about to open, what does it reserve for us?... It is not given to me to penetrate this mystery, but I beg God bless my dear parents a hundredfold for all the touching kindness they have for us!...
The first day of the year is for me a world of memories... I can still see Papa showering us with his caresses... He was so good!... But why recall these memories? This beloved Father has received the reward for his virtues, God has sent him a test worthy of him.
It is now striking nine, I am obliged to finish my letter without having said anything I should have said, but I hope that my dear parents will excuse their little Thérèse, and above all forgive the writing which is not not readable...
Happy New Year to my dear little Sisters!... Especially since Marie is cured very quickly, I will be angry with her if THE INFLUENZA prevents her from coming to see us!...
Goodbye my dear Uncle and my darling Aunt, your little girl wishes you a Happy New Year and kisses you with all her heart.
